Discover Braga 25’s third-quarter programme

  • 2025-06-30
From July onwards, the city will be hosting an eclectic summer programme that focuses on celebrating music in the open air.

Festivals celebrating the many facets of Minho culture return: the Castro-Galaico Festival (10–12 July), featuring musical proposals rooted in popular tradition and Castro, Celtic and Galician heritage; Sons do Noroeste (23–25 July), bringing three days of music with origins in Northern Portugal and Galicia; and Este Oeste, which highlights Braga’s eclectic sonic identity along the banks of the River Este. At the end of the month, the experimental project Extremo takes place in Falperra.

Scheduled for 26 July, this festival has been developed in close collaboration with the Municipality of Guimarães and focuses on experimental electronic music, featuring artists such as William Basinski.

Other artistic highlights will bring art and culture into public spaces across the city. This is the case of the contemporary circus festival Vaudeville Rendez-Vous, whose programme spans the main cities of the Minho region — from Braga to Guimarães, Barcelos and Vila Nova de Famalicão. Also launched on 31 May, the art and architecture festival Forma da Vizinhança will continue to activate the pavilions designed by invited architects between July and November, featuring artists such as Zabra, Frame Coletivo, A Recolectora, Soraia Gomes Teixeira and Landra.

Other unexpected sites for artistic activations include the city’s first-generation shopping centres. The project Shopyard Summer School invites 30 young participants from 17 nationalities to rethink the future of these spaces between 18 and 25 July, guided by the studios OITOO (Porto), BUREAU (Lisbon/Geneva) and OUEST (Brussels).

Alongside the extensive programme planned for what has become a landmark in Braga’s cultural calendar, Noite Branca de Braga (5–7 September) will include several projects specially developed by Braga 25. Arruada #3, a project by Clube Raiz, brings together multiple percussion groups in a procession-like celebration across the city, this time featuring the Orquestra de Dispositivos Eletrónicos and the group Outra Voz (Guimarães), creating a blend of distinct sonic universes and languages.

Also in September, within the Cinex programme, the Portuguese Capital of Culture presents the cine-concert That Day in Lisbon by Matthew Herbert and Daniel Blaufuks. The film is an expanded photograph in time, based on footage discarded in 1940 by cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan, later an Academy Award winner. Matthew Herbert’s music engages in dialogue with the images and the temporal narrative of Daniel Blaufuks. This unique performance will premiere at Theatro Circo, offering an expanded encounter between cinema and music, and between sound and image.

Mediation programmes will continue to be a key focus in the coming quarter, with an extensive programme of guided visits to Braga 25 projects, promoted by the Mediation Programme and Destino4All, alongside night tours of Theatro Circo.

Co-productions, premieres and the final quarter of 2025

The renowned exploratory music and media arts festival Semibreve is also one of the highlights of Braga 25’s programme for the remainder of the year. Celebrating its 14th edition in 2025, the line-up (23–26 October) includes names such as Actress & Suzanne Ciani, Ava Rasti and aya, among others. The full programme will be announced soon.

From 14 to 23 November, under the theme “all literature is a utopia”, the city hosts another edition of Utopia Braga. As in previous editions, this literary festival will feature reading activities, book presentations, courses, workshops, concerts, performances and activities for younger audiences. The full programme will be revealed shortly.

The final quarter of 2025 promises a series of premieres. Marco Martins will debut a new production at Theatro Circo in the closing months of the year. As part of the Cenários programme, in co-production with the Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II, the play The Secret Life of the Elderly, which premiered at the Festival d’Avignon last year, will be presented in Braga’s historic venue. Finally, the Companhia Nacional de Bailado will also feature in the Braga 25 programme with three works by Shechter, Wellenkamp and Naharin.
