The European Media Art Platform (EMAP) artistic residency programme continues in 2027. Co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, this initiative aims to support the creation of new works and promote exchange and collaboration between European artists.

Applications for the 2027 edition of the programme open today, 3 September, at call.emare.eu. Until 6 November at 13:00, artists based in an EU Member State or in one of a list of eligible non-EU countries can apply. Emerging artists, regardless of age or academic background, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must propose an artistic project in the fields of digital art, Media Art, robotic art or bioart, to be developed through a two-month residency in 2027 at one of the network’s member institutions. Accommodation is provided by the host institution, which will support the artists with their technical needs and provide them with a workspace.

Selected artists will also receive a €4,000 grant, a production budget of the same amount, travel expenses, and an additional €2,000 grant to cover the expenses of a collaborating partner. They will also be invited to a conference and gathering taking place in March at LABoral, in Gijón, Spain. Full details can be found at emare.eu.

In addition to supporting contemporary works at the intersection of art, technology and science, the programme also helps increase the international visibility of the works developed. Initially, the works are exhibited at the residency host institution. They are subsequently presented in solo or group exhibitions at the platform’s member institutions. There is also the possibility of showcasing the works in international contexts through a network of more than 150 partner institutions worldwide.

Applications are open at call.emare.eu. Each application must include a CV, audiovisual documentation of previous work and a preliminary project outline. Collaborators do not need to be confirmed at the time of application. Applicants may submit several projects and continue editing them until the deadline.

Formed by institutions from fifteen European countries, EMAP – European Media Art Platform is one of the leading networks supporting the creation and dissemination of Media Art, digital art, robotic art and bioart in Europe.

Over recent years, EMAP has gained recognition through a number of notable projects which, since the platform was launched in 2018, have received more than seventy international awards.

Presented at gnration in 2024, Unknown Label, by Nicolas Gourault, received an Honourable Mention at Prix Ars Electronica (2024). In 2025, it received the HUMAN AI AWARD from Kunstmuseum Bonn and Deutsche Telekom. The film version based on the installation, Their Eyes, premiered at the 2025 Berlinale, was shown online as part of The New York Times OP Docs and has so far won thirteen awards, in addition to receiving three nominations and three Honorable Mentions — including a nomination for the 2026 César Award for Best Documentary Short Film.

Hardly Working (2022), by the collective Total Refusal, also presented at gnration in 2024, received 22 awards and five Honorable Mentions. intangible, a virtual reality work by Carl Emil Carlsen, received the Interactive Award at CPH in Copenhagen in 2024, while Stranger to the Trees, by Kat Austen — also presented at gnration in 2024 — received the Falling Walls Arts & Science Award 2024.

Since 2022, gnration has been the only Portuguese institution to be part of the EMAP network. As part of the project, the Braga-based venue has hosted residencies by Luiz Zanotello, with the multimedia installation Tempo e Tempo (2024), Davor Sanvincenti, with the exhibition Nature Does Not Make a Sound, based on wildlife images from the Gerês region, and Marc Vilanova, with the audiovisual installation Cascade (2023), which has been presented around the world.
