Joana Miranda, executive coordinator of Braga Media Arts, is one of the speakers at the 17th Conference of the European Culture Next network, taking place from 7 to 9 October in Oulu, Finland.
Joana Miranda will join the panel discussion ‘Culture’s Contribution to Sustainability: Are the SDGs Offering the Answer?’, scheduled for this Thursday, 8 October, at 12.00 (local time), at the Oulu Theatre.

Braga is a UNESCO Creative City in the field of Media Arts and currently coordinates the sub-network in this area, which brings together 27 cities within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

At a time when sustainability is gaining prominence on the cultural agenda, the panel aims to discuss what is meant by a sustainable future and whether frameworks such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) fully reflect culture’s contribution to this mission.

The discussion will be moderated by Beatriz Garcia, a cultural policy expert who served on the panel of judges responsible for assessing Braga’s application to become European Capital of Culture 2027. Joining Joana Miranda will be John Crowley, chairman of the PHGD Group – a consultancy and technology group dedicated to environmental, social, digital and ecological transformation –, and Fredrik Lindencrona, head of research and co-creation at Inner Development Goals – a non-profit initiative that promotes the development of the human skills needed to achieve the SDGs.

The visit to Oulu is of particular significance for Braga, the founding city of Culture Next and host of the network’s autumn conference in 2027. This event is dedicated to digital transformation in the cultural sector, taking place between 20 and 22 October next year, across various venues in the city. Braga is represented in this network by Faz Cultura – Braga’s Municipal Cultural Organisation.

Founded in 2017, Culture Next is a European network bringing together around 40 cities – current or former candidates for the title of European Capital of Culture – and supporting them in defining and implementing urban development strategies based on culture and creativity.
